Make Homemade Dog Treats

Homemade dog treats are more nutritious if you make them yourself as you can control the ingredients. Many store bought varieties have ingredients that can actually cause digestive problems with dogs. Homemade dog treats are also great to make if your dog has allergies or special digestive needs due to illness.

Dog treats can be made easily by following a simple biscuit style recipe and baking the shaped dog treats until they are dry and hard. Most of the ingredients you would need to make homemade dog treats you can find in any grocery store. If you have problems finding rye kernels or liver powder for dog treats a good place to find them is at your local health food store.

When making homemade dog treats don’t be afraid to experiment a little with different flavors. Canine dog treat biscuits make great gifts for dog lovers and they can be made in a wide variety of flavors and colors. You can even make dog treat biscuits and shape them into a wreath for a dog loving friend for a one of a kind gift that will be sure to bring a smile to their face.

Ingredients to consider when making homemade dog treats would be whole grains like oatmeal, rye, wheat and some cornmeal. Broths can be meat broths like chicken or beef but don’t rule out vegetable juices either. Rice is another ingredient to think about using as it is easy on an older animals digestive system but use a ground rice flour instead of the whole rice grains.

Canine Dog Biscuits

1 3/4 Cups of Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 Cup of Cornmeal
1/2 Cup of Oatmeal
1/4 Cup Rye Kernels
1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 Tsp Salt
3 Tbs of Liver Powder
1/2 Cup of Meat drippings
1 Egg
1/2 Cup of Chicken or Beef Broth

Preheat oven to 350*. Combine whole wheat flour, cornmeal, oatmeal, rye kernels, garlic powder, salt and liver powder together in a large bowl. Add the meat drippings and blend till mixture resembles oatmeal. Mix in egg and enough chicken or beef broth to form a ball. Knead the dough 1-2 minutes and then roll on a floured board to one half inch thickness. Cut with a bone shaped cookie cutter and place on an oiled cookie sheet. Prick the biscuits with a fork before baking so they bake all the way through to prevent spoilage. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack before giving to your dog.
