A cockapoo is a canine that has been crossbred between American or English Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This breed has been around in the United States since the year 1950. Since then, this cute little toy dog has risen its way to popularity. It is very famous in Australia (also called as spoodle) and in Sweden (also known as a cockerpoo). A cockapoo comes in single colors—tan, white, black, brown, red, cream, silver and sable, with an occasional patching on the ear and eyes. This dog has a fun-loving and outgoing personality that sheds very little and is often agile. Its size and weight usually comes between 10 and 15 inches and from 12 to 24 pounds. Due to the fact that this pooch is a cross breed, it is not prone to genetic ailments that pure breeds usually have hence, it has very little health issues. A cockapoo has a long, often curly mane due to its parents’ breeds. Owning a cockapoo is a bit of high maintenance. You need to regularly trim its fur to avoid bacterial infection and the like. However, there are certain ways that you need to do in order for you to properly clip its thick mangy hair. Read on to learn more.
- A good old bath. Start by giving your pooch a warm and nice bath. This will remove all mattings and grimes that are stuck on your pup’s hair. Make sure that thoroughly dry its fur before you start trimming it all off.
- Position it right. Put it into a table with a rubber mat on it. This will prevent your dog from slipping during the trimming session. Put it on a standing position. It would be advisable if you have someone to hold it still.
- Prepare to clip it! Get a sharp pair of dog nippers or scissors and start trimming your pooch’s hair. The length that you are going to cut really depends on how thin or thick you would like your dog’s fur to be. It would be advisable if you base it on the current weather. If it is too cold, make sure that you retain the thickness of its coat and just trim the excess fur on its eyes, paws and tail. However, if it is a bit hot, you can cut its hair short.
- Brush right after. Get a soft bristled dog brush and gently brush your pup’s hair. This will remove all the excess fur that you have just trimmed off and it will also bring out the oil from the roots, making it shine!
