Even your canine friends will eventually grow tired of the same old dog food that comes from a plastic bag. To add a twist for your pet dog’s meals, you can make your own dog biscuits. These biscuits are also excellent treats that you can use for your pet as he undergoes obedience training or as you teach him new tricks.
Prepare the ingredients. The basics that you need are two cups of flour. Whole wheat is a good choice because this type of flour has plenty of fiber that will keep your dog healthy. You also need a six spoonfuls of corn oil, half a cup of chicken broth, and half a cup of corn meal. To add a familiar taste for the dog biscuits, include several pieces of beef jerky that has been cut into thin strips.
Mix. Combine the ingredients in a bowl and mix well. You can use a mechanical mixer if these are available. When all of the ingredients are finished, dust the countertop with flour and then knead the dough until you have flattened out the dough into a layer that is a quarter of an inch in thickness. While you are mixing the ingredients, preheat the oven to a temperature of at least 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cut. Take the layer of dough and use a cookie cutter to create shapes. Plenty of pet shops have cookie cutters that are designed in the shape of a bone, to help create an identifiable shape for the dog biscuits. This is especially important if you plant to make large batches of the biscuit and will store them around the house. The bone shape will help small children identify the dog biscuits.
Bake. Once the dough has been cut into suitable pieces, spray nonstick coating onto a pan. Arrange the dough onto the pan and bake for 15 to twenty minutes. Afterwards, let the dog biscuits cool down before letting your pet take a bite from the dog treats.
Storage. Some pet owners will create large batches of the dog biscuits. If you plan on sorting the dog biscuits, use Ziploc to keep them fresh and store the biscuits in the refrigerator. Make sure that you allow the biscuits to properly cool down before sealing the biscuits in Ziploc. Otherwise, moisture droplets can build up on the Ziploc bag and soften the biscuits. Generally, the biscuits should not be stored for long periods of time outside of the refrigerator, since the beef jerky will spoil.
Variations. You can add cheese to the mixture if you want your dog to have a creamier and cheesier treat. You can also add bits of vegetables that have been mashed into the mix, if your dog needs a more nutritional diet. Add more beef jerky if your dog does not like the taste of vegetables. In general however, dogs will eat vegetables in small amounts.
Making your dog happy does not have to be expensive. By baking your own dog biscuits, you can easily make plenty of cheap but tasty and healthy treats for your dog.
