How To Make a Dog Lounge Pad

If you’re like most, you love your dog, but you hate that they get up on your couch, chairs and possibly, your bed.  No matter how clean you keep them, dogs are not the cleanest animals out there.  Their fur can hold dust, pollen and other allergens that can make your furniture and bedding begin to look worn and dirty.  Sure, you could cover your valuable pieces with a blanket or sheet, but then you’re left with a less than desirable look to your favorite rooms.  So, how do you keep Fido happy and yourself?  Consider that dogs need a place to rest their bones, just like you do.  The floor can be a tough place to lie for your whole life, so why not make your dog a lounge pad to keep him happy and off your furniture?

Making a dog lounge pad is easier than you think and it can be done within a couple of minutes.  You will need some fabric and latex or foam padding.  You can buy these at the crafts section of nearly any store.  You can buy padding that comes in different depths, or you can choose the egg carton type if you think your dog will like that better.  Make sure that you give your pooch ample room to stretch out on their lounge pad and cut to suit.

Once you’ve cut the lounge pad, you’ll need to give it a cover.  The easiest way to do this is to create an envelope out of the fabric that you’ll be using to cover your dog lounge pad.  If you have a sewing machine, this will be much easier to complete.  Make sure you’ve chosen enough fabric to wrap around the padding, while allowing about two inches at the top.

Fold the fabric on top of itself so that the sides will meet evenly and the inside of the fabric faces out.  Pin the fabric closed so that it is easier to sew, then proceed to sew the sides of your dog lounge pad cover.  Once you have completed this step, you will want to hem the top so there are no rough edges showing.  You can close the top of your dog lounge pad cover with ribbons, snaps, buttons or you can leave it open, depending on how you want it to look.

Once you have completed these steps, turn your dog pad so that the right side faces out, much as you would a pillow case, and insert the pad.  Show it to your dog, because you now have a new dog lounge pad for him/her to enjoy.
