How To Deal with Canine Eye Odor

You sit on your couch after a long day of work. Max jumps up on your lap wagging his tail and licking every visible place on your face with excitement. You wonder if life gets any better than this. Wait, just one minute… What on earth is that smell?

You check on the floor, around your couch and even your socks. Just as you bring your nose near max you realize he is the culprit. That unpleasant smell is his face and it’s coming from his eyes. How is it possible that little Max could produce such a stench?

This odor is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria from the natural secretions of tear ducts. Certain breeds are prone to this problem such as the Pekingese, Pugs, Bichon Frise, Havanese and the Bulldog. This harmless process can cause an odor if not properly maintained. Following this guide will provide a much better situation for both you and Max. Here’s how to get rid of that smell and create a much happier environment.

  1. Head to your local drug store for a few key ingredients. You’ll want to pick up Hypo-tears eye drops, Johnson Baby Shampoo and cotton pads.  You’ll also want to have two face cloths on hand. Another great product is Eye Envy Powder specifically formulated for the canine eye area. Gather all of your supplies and head to your kitchen sink or bathroom.
  2. Take the baby shampoo and dilute with water. Put this solution onto one of the facecloths and wipe one of the eyes paying extra attention to any staining and the folds of the face if applicable. You may have to repeat the application of the solution a few times to make sure the eye area is very clean.
  3. Take the second facecloth for the other eye and repeat step two. It’s very important that you use a separate facecloth for each eye to avoid cross contamination. For instance, if the dog has an eye infection in one eye, you do not want to transfer the infection to the other eye.
  4. Check both eyes for signs of infection such as pus, redness and/or swelling. It’s a good idea to check for foreign matter in the eyes at this time too. If any signs are present, it is time to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Do not proceed any further if you suspect an infection.
  5. The next step is to take the Hypo-tears and put between 3 to 5 drops in each eye. This is an artificial tear solution safe for canine use as long as the eye is healthy. As always, it’s a good idea to consult your vet before starting any alternative care. This step is to flush out any dust or debris in the eye which may cause irritation and lead to excessive tearing. The excessive tearing is bacteria prone which causes the odor.
  6. It is now time to make sure the eye area is completely dry. Disposable cotton pads are perfect for this job. Use an outward motion from the corner of the eye towards the ears. You can use as many cotton pads as needed until the eye area is completely dry. Make sure you change the pad between eyes. Once again, you do not want to cross contaminate between eyes.
  7. This is the optional step for those who have chosen to purchase the Eye Envy Powder. Eye Envy is used around the eye area to keep the moisture from clinging to the fur. Take the product and apply it in a daubing motion being extra careful not to get the powder into the eyes. Lightly brush off any excess powder with a cotton pad.

These steps will ensure that your perfect pooch will be the talk of the doggie world. He will be a delight to anyone close enough to smell his baby fresh scent and see his crystal clear eyes. This, along with a regular grooming regime, will not only keep him looking his very best but ensure optimal health. You’ll be able to spot abnormalities early by being aware of what is normal on your dog’s skin, eyes and ears. It’s just one more step to a happy healthy pet.
